    Ross University School of Medicine, slated to permanently relocate the medical sciences campus to Bridgetown, Barbados in January 2019, invites applications for Director, Academy for Teaching and Learning. The academic center will leverage existing facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, which is centrally located in the vibrant capital city.

    Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Effective teachers are sought, particularly individuals who are interested in improving medical education.

     

    The Academy for Teaching and Learning provides a highly coordinated system of academic support from admission through successful completion of the Foundations of Medicine program. The benefits of the program also serve students well as they enter the clinical portion of their medical training, by supporting the development of critical thinking skills needed during their years of clinical study and in their careers as physicians. The Academy includes the following areas of focus:

      

    1) Cognitive Skills Development Programs

    2) Peer Tutoring Program with coordinated training

    3) Essential Life Long Learning Skills (ELLS) Program

    4) Academic Enhancement Program (AEP)

    5) A contemporary, high-tech pre-matriculation transition program

     

    The Director, Academy for Teaching and Learning will report to the Dean, Medical Sciences and has the responsibility to provide leadership for the Academy and to represent the Academy in the campus administration. The Director will provide appropriate oversight and evaluation of the programs, faculty and staff attached to the Academy. In consultation with Academy faculty and staff, the Director will recommend new programs or changes in current programs to better respond to the needs of students and faculty in the campus community. Working with the Dean, Medical Sciences and the Associate Dean, Academy of Teaching and Learning, the Director will develop an annual budget for the Academy and obtain and allocate the resources required to ensure the high quality and accessibility of Academy programs and other offerings.

     

     

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to the efficient and effective operation of the Academy.
    • Serve as the Academy's liaison to campus communities as appropriate. Provide consultation to RUSM departments and administrators with the goal of enhancing overall student performance.
    • Coordinate procedures for evaluating the effectiveness of each of the Academy’s five focus areas and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise regarding best practices in medical education
    • Construct and administer the annual budget for the Academy, in consultation with Academy faculty and staff.
    • Justify and recommend personnel needs for the Academy in a thorough and timely manner.
    • Ensure that faculty within the Academy have personal interactions with students, and the campus community, that are of continuous high quality.
    • Recommend to the Dean, Medical Sciences long range planning for staffing, budget and space requirements.
    • This is not a necessarily exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties, or efforts associated with this position; additions may be made as the Academy grows and develops.

     

     

    Qualifications

    • Ph.D., M.D., or Ed.D in educational psychology, or closely related area preferably in relation to medicine. Demonstrated record of outstanding achievement leading educational outcome improvement programs particularly relating to student academic success.
    • A significant publication record of research and scholarly activity in the areas of pedagogical innovation and application of metacognitive approaches to student learning.
    • Administrative experience in an academic setting is desired, including supervision of academic and professional personnel, budget management, and a demonstrated ability to organize and create programs.  
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and administrators.
    • Desire for self-improvement.
    • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team.
