    Ross University School of Medicine, slated to permanently relocate the Medical Sciences campus to Bridgetown, Barbados in January 2019, invites applications for a faculty post at any rank in the Academy for Teaching and Learning. The academic center will leverage existing facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, which is centrally located in the vibrant capital city.

    Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

     

    Responsibilities

    Working with faculty members and medical students, particularly academically “at risk” students within the Academy for Teaching and Learning, the suitable candidate will become an active member of a faculty team involved in:

    • Small group and individual interventions for the enhancement of students’ academic literacy and their facility with medical discourse
    • Utilization of diagnostic interviews/assessments for identification of students’ specific learning strengths and weaknesses
    • Selection, refinement and implementation of study and test-taking skills training, specifically targeting medical education
    • Facilitation of small group exploration of medical science course material and multiple-choice questions
    • Use of enquiry-based learning, questioning dialogues and exploratory talk to improve critical reasoning skills
    • Collaborative development of teaching and learning material resources
    • Design and delivery of faculty development workshops specific to teaching and assessment
    • Liaison with faculty members from the basic science and clinical medicine departments
    • Collaborate with student affairs and counseling departments
    • Evaluation of written work based on medical science and clinical curriculum competencies
    • Training of higher performing students to participate as peer tutors
    • Facilitation of Problem-Based Learning small groups in the general student population
    • Medical education research initiatives and proposals that lead to publications.

    Qualifications

    • Terminal degree, preferred and/or MD and/or PhD in education
    • Experience and expertise in working with students at the undergraduate medical education level
    • Teaching experience, preferably in small group format with students and faculty
    • Well-grounded in logic and critical analysis, preferably with training in medicine and/or basic sciences
    • Understanding of educational theory and psychology of learning
    • Success in presenting abstracts and publishing research in peer-reviewed education-related journals
    • Excellent communication skills in English
    • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
    • Desire for self-improvement
    • Prior teaching experience at a North American or United Kingdom medical school preferred
    • Knowledge of principles, methods, techniques, materials and equipment used in postsecondary teaching/medical education preferred
    • Documented record of teaching effectiveness desirable
    • Educational technology skills, including use of e-learning management systems, audience response systems, online examinations, videoconferencing, desirable
    • Ability to demonstrate ongoing faculty development in medical education desirable
    • Ability to demonstrate use of active teaching methods preferred
    • Ability to initiate, complete, and present results of medical education research projects desirable
