    Ross University School of Medicine, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, invites applications for a faculty post at any rank in Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medical Foundations. The academic center has facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, which is centrally located in the vibrant capital city of Bridgetown.

    Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

     

    It is important to note that we are looking for dynamic, adaptive, flexible colleagues who are interested in teaching in a variety of ways, that are open to utilizing and embracing technology, interacting with students in small group learning formats and creating materials for teaching, which may include videos, digital workbooks, etc. 

    Responsibilities

    • Prepare course material
    • Deliver effective interactive lectures and workshops
    • Facilitate small group learning in labs and simulation
    • Provide summative and formative assessment of student performance in various activities
    • Prepare, administer, and grade clinical examinations
    • Proctor written examinations as needed
    • Supervise and teach students under actual or simulated clinical situations
    • Participate in curriculum planning, development and delivery
    • Advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel
    • Develop new instructional materials and teaching techniques with participation in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum planning
    • Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence
    • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected, and confer with advisory groups in order to modify course content
    • Prepare and review examination questions to assess students’ knowledge and proficiency
    • Help cover the work of the department in a cooperative and collegial fashion

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Below are the attributes of the education, experience, knowledge, and skills required to competently perform in this position:

    • MD, MBBS, DO degree or equivalent medical qualification
    • Current licensure
    • Residency trained and Board Eligible/Board Certified
    • Current medical practice or significant medical practice experience within specialty (I would be OK with hiring recently retired physicians with extensive clinical experience or anyone who is leaving the U.S. system because they no longer wish to practice in that environment)
    • Recent academic appointment within accredited U.S. or foreign medical school and/or experience teaching medical students or residents preferred
    • Documented record of teaching effectiveness desirable
    • Knowledge of adult learning methodologies
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
    • Desire for self-improvement
    • Educational technology skills, including use of e-learning management systems, audience response systems, online examinations, videoconferencing, desirable
    • Ability to demonstrate ongoing faculty development in medical education desirable
    • Ability to demonstrate use of active teaching methods preferred
    • Ability to initiate, complete, and present results of medical education research projects
