    Ross University School of Medicine, slated to permanently relocate the medical sciences campus to Bridgetown, Barbados in January 2019, invites applications for Student Advising Coordinator. The academic center will leverage existing facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, which is centrally located in the vibrant capital city.


    Primary responsibilities involve administrative and organizational tasks relating to advising medical students within the medical sciences portion of the curriculum and transitioning to clinical rotations. The incumbent works closely with all faculty and staff in Barbados and Miramar, FL, USA to provide proper support to students to aid in student success.




    The Student Advising Coordinator reports to the Director of Student Affairs and has primary responsibility in four areas:

    • Coordinate and implement advisement of medical students within the medical sciences portion of the curriculum to transposing to clinical rotations.
    • Student support and advising for semesters 3-5 including aiding in the transition medical sciences to clinical clerkships.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate programs designed to improve student success and satisfaction, and build an understanding of the resources, polices, and support associated with medical science through clinical sciences.

    Works closely with all faculty and staff in Barbados and Miramar, FL, USA to provide proper support to students to aid in student success.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities


    • Assist the director to achieve the overall goals of student academic advising and transition.
    • Meet one-on-one and facilitate small and large group sessions to educate students on policies, procedures, academic tracks, clinical tracks, and career paths
    • Advise students regarding leave and withdraw policies relevant to both Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences portions of their education
    • Coordinate programming and advising sessions with clinical and career advising colleagues.
    • Ability to interpret policies and advise students appropriately.
    • Advocate for policy change to supervisor and administration as needed.
    • Provide general advisement and resource referral for primarily 3rd – 5th semester students as well as occasionally 1st and 2nd semester students.
    • Develop printed materials, information packets, brochures and email communications as they relate to student transition to clinical semesters and career paths
    • Collect and maintain statistics and data that will drive quality improvement and provide for program evaluation
    • Contribute to the updates for the RUSM Student Handbook; recommend, implement, and where applicable enforce policies and procedures as they relate to the student experience and environment.
    • Assists in maintenance of student affairs content on websites and the portal related to student affairs

    Completes other duties as assigned.


    Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

    • Master’s Degree in a field to perform the job successfully (prefer a degree in higher education administration, college personal, human development, counseling or closely related field).
    • Knowledge of and/or experience in student advising, academic advising, career advising, student programing, study abroad programs, graduate programs, orientation and transition programs, etc.
    •  Incumbent should possess good verbal and presentation skills
    • Background in medical education preferred
    • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office
    • Ability to work independently
    • Able to prioritize and work under pressure.
