Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the Center for Anatomical Sciences and Medical Imaging and oversees the general operations including cadaver care, instructional activities, general cleanliness, and maintenance of electronics and equipment for optimal instructional and research purposes.
  • Manages and works closely with the anatomy laboratory technicians by allocating them duties and overseeing their daily work schedules.
  • Performs daily oversight to ensure the entire facility is mold-free for the safety of the cadavers.
  • Ensures that all the electronic devices and equipment are mechanically sound.
  • Ensures the facility is equipped with the necessary safety equipment and that equipment is in good working condition.
  • Coordinates meetings with the anatomy laboratory technicians and Chair for the purpose of improving procedures and assessing facility needs.
  • Oversees activities in the facility to ensure that they are in compliance with the necessary Dominican and US legal requirements governing the use of the cadavers for study and research.
  • Supervises the offloading of the cadavers, which entails inspection of new cadavers and verification of the information contained on the death certificates.
  • Oversees the selection, maintenance and preservation of he cadavers used for gross anatomy instruction.
  • Supervises the dissection and maintenance of the prosected cadavers; this is achieved by working closely with the anatomy faculty.
  • Oversees the disposal of cadaveric wastes generated during the dissection.
  • Supervises the cremation process, which entails cadaver dismemberment, transportation, incineration, pulverization and storage of the ashes.
  • Oversees the shipment of cremains back to the cadaver suppliers or the donors.
  • Generates and maintains databases for the cadavers, cremains, cadaveric images, equipment and other teaching aids.
  • Ensures that the cadavers are treated with dignity and respect while in the facility; this entails all the activities from cadaver offloading up to the return of cremains (i.e., cleaning, disinfection, storage, dissection and cremation).
  • Maintains the confidentiality of the donors and all the information pertaining to the cadavers.
  • Ensures all the facility users and visitors maintain a high level of professionalism and adhere to the facility rules and policies.
  • Provides support to other members of the department and the RUSM community in general.
  • Monitors and facilitates research activities undertaken within the facility by RUSM faculty and students while enforcing policies concerning the use of cadavers or cadaveric materials.
  • Assists student groups and organizations with educational activities conducted or associated with the Anatomy and Imaging Facility.
  • Consults with the responsible faculty or the course directors on the requirements for lab sessions and practical exams.
  • Assists with the setting up of the practical exams and tidying up of the gross anatomy laboratory after the practical exams.
  • Instructs students on human gross anatomy and dissected materials.
  • Works closely with the departmental chairs to formulate and enforce facility policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that the facility policies and procedures are up-to-date and conspicuously displayed on the facility bulletin boards and also posted online.
  • Ensures all the facility users including the students, newly hired faculty and staff are fully oriented with facility policies and procedures.
  • Manages and runs the RUSM Donor Program; specific duties include contracting donors, maintaining donor records, accepting bodies, incinerating the remains and sending back the cremains to the donor families.
  • Oversees the embalming of the donated bodies.
  • Assists with the scheduling and preparation of the facility for visitation by school groups and other RUSM visitors.
  • Provides periodic updates, databases and reports to the anatomy department chairs.
  • Works closely with the Teaching Assistants (TA’s) for smooth running of the TA instructional sessions and “Mockticals”.
  • Consults with the chair and other faculty to evaluate and prioritize facility requirements.
  • Resolves problems by working closely with the chairs and/or the appropriate personnel.
  • Performs any other duties assigned by the department chair.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, terminal degree preferred.
  • Knowledge and or certificates related to health and safety and general lab policies and processes required.
  • Ability to aid in gross anatomy instruction in the laboratory setting is a plus.
