Ross University School of Medicine, located on the beautiful Caribbean island of Dominica in the West Indies, invites applications for a faculty post, at any rank, as a Radiologist.

 

The Department of Anatomy in partnership with the Department of Clinical Medicine seek a radiologist to teach in the Foundations of Medicine curriculum in semesters 1-4 as well as develop teaching modules for the clinical clerkship program in semesters 5-10. Lecture and small group formats are used for curriculum delivery and faculty are expected to be proficient in teaching in both settings. The Department of Anatomy has a modern, highly advanced technological medical imaging space that can be used for small group teaching and a variety of educational uses and projects. Interviewing and physical examination skills labs, case-based small group learning, a robust Standardized Patient program, and high fidelity medical simulation using Laerdal SimMan3G technology, are all employed for the Clinical Skills curriculum delivery within the Department of Clinical Medicine. In addition, RUSM pre-clinical students have a number of required activities with live patients in community clinics and the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau. Curriculum activities and content are supported by behavioral learning objectives and proficiency expectations are clearly defined.

The Medical Education Readiness Program (MERP) located in Miramar, Florida is actively seeking an experienced full time faculty for the position of Assistant Professor of Biochemistry. The Biochemistry faculty teaches Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and provides description and understanding of chemical structures of biomolecules and their role in biochemical pathways, biosynthesis and degradation as well as energy generation in the human body to aspiring medical students to the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) and Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM). RUSM, part of Adtalem Global Education (formerly known as DeVry Education Group), is committed to educating a diverse group of skilled physicians. The CAO will provide intellectual leadership and support for all academic departments and linked multi-disciplinary programs at RUSM; and will act as the face of the RUSM academic community to internal and external constituencies. The CAO is responsible for leading the faculty, staff, and administrative teams on academic and instructional matters relevant to student success. The CAO will report directly to Dr. William F. Owen, Jr., MD, FACP, RUSM’s new Dean & Chancellor. Dean Owen is a globally experienced academic health system leader who is focused on the continued transformation of RUSM to forge for pedagogical innovation to create a medically competent and socially engaged physician workforce.
 
The position is based in Miramar, FL, USA and serves medical students sequentially studying basic sciences on the island of Dominica, West Indies, internal medicine foundations in Miramar, FL, and their core and elective clinical rotations in a strong network of US teaching hospitals across the country. Travel to Dominica and the current and future clinical sites domestically and globally is expected.
 
The successful candidate will be an MD with an active medical license in the US, UK, or Canada (non-MDs with exceptional experience in medical education may be considered); a strong academic record and reputation, as well as a proven track record as an administrator; and academic credentials supporting eligibility for appointment at the rank of Professor within a RUSM department. It is preferred that the candidate will have at least 15 years of direct participation in medical education; knowledge of contemporary medical pedagogical issues involving medical education; experience in curriculum assessment and evaluation with a focus on improving measurable student outcomes; familiarity with budget development, capital planning, and fiscal oversight; and an understanding of medical school accreditation.
 
Expectations of Leadership
The following represent primary areas of focus and expected impact of the CAO over the first 12 to 18 months in the role and beyond (not listed in any particular order of significance):
 
Lead the advancement of medical education at RUSM 2

  • Working with the basic science chairs on Dominica and the clinical chairs at the US clinical sites, continue to develop and implement an integrated and comprehensive four year medical education that focuses on the entire student experience.
  • Lead the effort to modernize the curriculum and ensure students are trained and educated to practice in a changing healthcare environment.
  • The CAO will lead and support the process of curriculum mapping and assessment of student competency. 

 
Recruitment, retention and development

  • Develop an approach to faculty recruitment and professional development that accommodates for possible fluctuations in student enrollment and the unique features of recruiting to the island of Dominica. 
  • Creatively find opportunities for faculty to participate in continuing medical education.
  • As a member of the senior administration and the Dean’s cabinet, be the voice for the faculty and champion their continued development. 

 
Ensure excellent academic outcomes

  • Working with the clinical chairs, the CAO will ensure the core clinical experiences are consistent at each of the clinical sites that are part of RUSM’s network.
  • The CAO will update and expand quality indicators for the education programs and incorporate them into a continuous quality improvement process. 

 
Develop personal and professional credibility, gain respect, and build trust internally and externally

  • Understand, acculturate, and positively contribute to the culture of RUSM and to Adtalem.
  • Develop significant, positive and trustworthy relationships throughout the organization. One important relationship to note is with the Board of Trustees, which is responsible for overseeing the Ross University School of Medicine and the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Reporting Relationships
The CAO will report to: Dr. William F. Owen, Jr., MD, FACP, Dean & Chancellor. As a member of the senior administrative team and the Dean’s Cabinet, the CAO works in close partnership with the Chief Operating Officer and collaboratively with RUSM leaders in finance, human resources, medical pedagogy, admissions, and residency placement.
 
Direct Reports:
Reporting to the CAO are the Associate Dean of Student Services, Senior Associate Dean (Dominica campus), Director of Internal Medicine Foundations, Associate Dean of Clinical Services, Associate Dean of Simulation, and the Director of the Health Clinic and Counseling.
